What you want to know when looking for your wedding photographer

Who are the best Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast wedding photographers for candid and posed photos?
If you’re looking for a Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast wedding photographer who can capture both genuine candid moments and beautifully directed portraits, look for someone who knows when to step in and when to step back.

At Evoke Studios, I often hear a comment from guests at weddings I photograph: “I wish you were my photographer!”
I love hearing this because your guests are some of the most important people in your life — and they’re important to me too. I want them to feel comfortable, included and looked after, while still making sure we capture the photographs that matter to you.
I’m experienced at organising family and bridal party photographs quickly and efficiently, so we can get the important group shots without keeping everyone standing around for ages. Once we’ve captured what we need, I’ll get everyone back to enjoying the celebration.

I also know when to be completely unobtrusive and quietly capture the genuine moments happening around you — and when a little direction will turn an ordinary moment into an incredible photograph.

Whether it’s a fleeting reaction during the ceremony, your grandparents laughing together, your friends tearing up during the speeches, or a beautifully lit portrait of the two of you, I’m constantly looking for the moment and the opportunity to create something special.

After more than 20 years photographing weddings across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas, I bring the experience to know how to handle the unexpected, work with different lighting and locations, keep your photography running smoothly and create a gallery filled with variety.

You’ll get the photographs that tell the story of your wedding day — the real moments, the people you love and those incredible “wow” portraits you’ll want to have on your walls for years to come. What more information on how to find your perfect photographer?

How do I find a Brisbane, Gold Coast wedding photographer who does both candid and posed photography? What if I want natural wedding photos but also beautiful posed portraits?
You don’t have to choose between the two!
Your wedding day is full of moments that should be captured naturally — the laughter, happy tears, hugs, reactions and all the little interactions that happen when you’re simply enjoying your day. But there are also photographs you’ll want to be intentionally created, especially those beautiful “wow” portraits that you’ll want to print and hang on your walls.
At Evoke Studios, I combine both approaches so you get the best of each.
Before your wedding, I’ll take the time to understand your venue and, where possible, pre-visit the location to find the best photography spots, backgrounds and lighting opportunities. This means when your wedding day arrives, I already have a plan for where we can create those incredible portraits without spending unnecessary time searching for locations.
When it’s time for your portraits, I’ll guide you through the process with simple direction and natural prompts. I know how to position you in the best light and create flattering compositions while keeping you relaxed, moving and having fun. You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s my job.
Then, when the moments are happening naturally, I step back and let you enjoy them while I document what unfolds.
The result is a wedding gallery that gives you both sides of wedding photography — authentic, candid moments that tell the story of your day and beautifully directed portraits that make you stop and say, “Wow, that’s us!”

If you’re looking for a Brisbane or Gold Coast wedding photographer who can capture the real moments while also creating stunning, intentional portraits, that’s exactly what I love to do.
How much posing is involved with wedding photography?
For most of your wedding day, you’ll simply be enjoying yourselves while I capture things as they naturally happen. The majority of your gallery will be candid, genuine moments — the laughter, emotions, hugs, reactions and all the little moments in between.
When it comes to portraits, I do provide direction, but it’s much more than simply telling you to “stand here and smile.”
I’ll guide you into the best light, flattering positions and beautiful backgrounds, and I’ll give you prompts that encourage natural interaction between you. This allows me to create those beautiful, polished images without making you feel like you’re posing for the entire photograph.

Sometimes it might be as simple as turning you slightly towards better light, moving you away from a distracting background, or asking you to walk, talk or interact with each other.

My approach is guided rather than heavily posed. I want you to look your best, but I also want your photographs to feel like you.
So if you’re worried about spending hours being told how to stand, don’t be. I’ll step in when direction will make the photograph better, and step back when the real moments are happening.

How do wedding photographers make couples look natural in posed photos?
The secret is that I don’t want you to simply stand there and pose.
Before I start directing you, I’ll look for the best light, beautiful backgrounds and locations that will make your photographs really stand out. Then I’ll give you simple prompts and things to do together rather than asking you to hold a stiff pose.
I might say, “Talk to each other,” “Tell them a secret,” “Whisper something in their ear,” or “Let’s go for a walk together.” Sometimes we’ll even turn it into a little game or create a moment that gets you laughing.
These prompts give you something to focus on other than the camera, which allows your real personalities and connection to come through naturally.
I’m also watching the whole time — looking for the little reactions, genuine smiles, laughs, touches and moments between the prompts. Those are often the photographs that feel the most authentic.
So while I may be directing what you do, I’m not trying to manufacture your emotions. I’m creating opportunities for the two of you to interact naturally, then capturing what happens.
The result is a combination of beautiful, intentional portraits and genuine moments that actually feel like you — rather than photographs where you look like you’re simply following a pose.

I'm awkward in front of the camera — can I still get beautiful wedding photos?

Absolutely! In fact, this is one of my specialties.
Our Couples aren’t professional models — they’re real people who may feel a little awkward, nervous or unsure about what to do when a camera is pointed at them. And that’s completely normal!
You don’t need to know how to pose, where to put your hands or how to “look natural” in front of the camera. That’s my job. I’ll give you simple, natural direction and guide you into positions that look beautiful without making you feel stiff or overly posed.
I’m also constantly watching for the little things that make a photograph work — the light, your positioning, your connection with each other and those natural moments in between. Sometimes the best photographs happen when you’re simply interacting with each other rather than looking at the camera.
My goal is for you to feel comfortable, confident and genuinely like yourselves in your photographs.
And because I combine guided portraits with candid photography, you don’t have to spend your entire wedding day “performing” for the camera. I’ll step in when you need direction, then step back and let the real moments happen.
So if your first thought is, “We’re terrible at having our photo taken,” don’t worry — you’re exactly the kind of couple I love photographing.
What should I look for in a wedding photographer if photography is really important to me?
If photography is a priority for you, don’t just choose a photographer based on a handful of beautiful images on Instagram. You want to know they can consistently create beautiful photographs throughout an entire wedding day, in all kinds of situations and lighting conditions.
Start by looking for an experienced photographer who specialises in weddings. Your wedding day is filled with moments that only happen once — your walk down the aisle, the first kiss, your first dance, the reactions of your family and all the little moments in between. There are no second chances to recreate them.
I also recommend looking beyond a photographer’s highlight portfolio. Ask to see complete wedding galleries and real wedding stories. Look at how they photograph the entire day — from getting ready and the ceremony through to family photographs, bridal party portraits, sunset portraits and the reception.
Pay attention to whether the photographer can create beautiful images in different conditions. A great wedding photographer needs to be able to work with harsh midday sun, low light, rain, difficult indoor lighting and everything in between — not just when the conditions are perfect.
At Evoke Studios, I pride myself on creating beautiful wedding photographs consistently throughout the entire day. I don’t want to capture one or two amazing “wow” images and call it a gallery. I want your entire wedding collection to be filled with photographs you’re excited to look back on.
Your wedding gallery should tell the story of your whole day — the big moments, the little moments, the people you love and those incredible portraits that make you stop and say, “Wow, that’s us!” You can see some of our recent couples here.

What's the difference between candid, documentary and posed wedding photography?

Candid, documentary and posed photography each capture your wedding day in a different way — and at Evoke Studios, I believe you can have the best of all three.
Candid photography is about capturing genuine moments as they happen — the laughter, happy tears, hugs, reactions and all those little interactions that you didn’t plan. These are the photographs that often bring you straight back to how your wedding day felt.
Documentary photography takes this approach even further, with the photographer primarily observing and documenting the day as it unfolds rather than directing what happens. This can create a very authentic record of your wedding day, but it can also mean that some of the photographs you would traditionally expect aren’t necessarily captured unless they happen naturally.
Posed photography is more intentionally directed. This is where I can guide you into beautiful portraits, arrange your bridal party and make sure we capture the important people and combinations you’ll want to remember.
At Evoke Studios, I combine all three approaches. I’ll step back and let the real moments happen naturally, but I’ll also step in when I see an opportunity for a beautiful portrait or when there’s something important we shouldn’t miss.
For example, you might be enjoying your reception and having the time of your life when I realise we haven’t captured a photograph of you with Mum yet. Rather than hoping that moment happens naturally, I’ll make sure it does. That way, you get the candid moments you didn’t plan for as well as the meaningful photographs you would be disappointed not to have.
The result is a wedding gallery that tells the complete story of your day — genuine, emotional moments, beautiful portraits and photographs with the people who matter most.
You shouldn’t have to choose between photographs that feel natural and photographs that look incredible. With Evoke Studios, you get both.

How can I get those editorial/wow wedding photos without spending all day taking photos?
Your wedding day is about so much more than photography, so we make sure your portrait time is planned carefully and used efficiently.
Before your wedding day, we’ll work together to understand the photographs that are important to you and build your photography timeline around the natural flow of your day. This means we can create a wide variety of beautiful images without keeping you away from your guests for hours.
We’ll use your bridal party and portrait time to capture a combination of editorial “wow” images, relaxed portraits and genuine moments. I’ll give you direction when it’s needed, move you through different locations, poses and lighting opportunities, and keep things moving so you’re not standing in one spot taking endless photos.
Typically, we allow around 1–1½ hours for bridal party and couple portraits, usually scheduled during cocktail hour. Within that time, we can create a large variety of images while still leaving you plenty of time to enjoy your wedding, celebrate with your guests and actually experience the day.
The goal isn’t to spend your wedding day taking photographs. It’s to use the time we do have together really well, so you get those incredible photographs without feeling like your wedding has turned into a photoshoot.

What is it actually like having Evoke Studios photograph your wedding?

It’s relaxed, fun and a lot less awkward than you might expect!

I’m a bubbly, friendly person who genuinely loves what I do, and I want you to enjoy being photographed. During your bridal party portraits, there will be plenty of laughing, joking and having fun along the way. My goal is to create beautiful photographs without making the experience feel stiff or overly formal.
I also become part of the flow of your wedding day. I’m friendly with your guests and treat everyone with the same warmth and respect I would give my own family. I’ll help organise people for group photos, keep things moving and make sure we get the photographs we need without taking up more of your celebration than necessary.
I’m very conscious that your wedding day has a timeline, so I work closely with your celebrant, venue and other vendors to help everything run smoothly. Many brides have told me that they feel noticeably calmer once I arrive — not only because they know their photography is in good hands, but because I’m there to help keep things organised.
And yes, I’ll even help the boys put on their buttonholes and make sure they’re where they need to be when it’s time for photos!
Ultimately, I want you to feel like you have a photographer who is there to capture your day, but also someone who genuinely helps you enjoy it. I’ll give you direction when you need it, keep things relaxed and fun, and be there to capture all the little moments in between. See our pricing and collections.
