Newborn Photography – Frequently Asked Questions
Brisbane & Gold Coast Newborn Photographer
When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?
The ideal time for a newborn photography session is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and more flexible, allowing us to safely create those beautiful, curled-up newborn poses.
If you’ve missed this window, please don’t worry — we photograph babies of all ages. Older newborns may need a little extra time to settle, and sessions can take slightly longer, but stunning images are still absolutely possible.
When should I book my newborn session?
We recommend booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy. Your booking is held as a tentative date based on your due date, as babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule.
Once your baby is born, we simply adjust the session date to suit — there are no rescheduling or cancellation fees.
I had a C-section — should I wait before booking?
No, there’s no need to wait. By the time you are fully healed, your baby may be sleeping less and may no longer be flexible enough for certain newborn poses.
In our studio, we take care of all baby handling, posing, and settling, so you can relax and move at your own pace. If travelling isn’t comfortable, we also offer in-home newborn photography sessions across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
My baby has pimples or baby acne — is that a problem?
Not at all. Newborn skin conditions such as baby acne, redness, or flaky skin are very common. These temporary blemishes are gently corrected during our professional editing and retouching process.
My baby still has their umbilical cord clip — is that okay?
Yes. We regularly photograph babies who still have their umbilical clip attached. We carefully pose and style your baby to discreetly hide it while ensuring your baby’s comfort and safety at all times.
What should my baby wear?
Newborns photograph beautifully naturally, allowing us to capture all their tiny features and details. We provide wraps, fabrics, and props to keep your baby comfortable and covered where needed.
If you have a special outfit you’d like included, please bring it along and we’ll do our best to incorporate it into your session.
What should parents wear?
Before your session, we’ll have a phone consultation to discuss colour palettes and styling. We’ll guide you on what works best on camera and complements your newborn.
We recommend avoiding large logos, bold patterns, or photo prints. As accidents can happen during newborn sessions, bringing a spare outfit is always a good idea.
What should I bring to the session?
If your baby is bottle-fed, please bring extra bottles beyond what you’d normally need. You’re also welcome to bring meaningful items such as special blankets, toys, or gifts.
If siblings are attending, snacks and quiet activities can help keep them happy and relaxed during the session.
Can other family members attend?
Absolutely. Parents and siblings are always included in newborn sessions. Grandparents are also welcome — just let us know in advance so we can allow extra time.
How long does a newborn photography session take?
Newborn sessions are baby-led and unhurried. Most sessions take approximately 2–3 hours, allowing time for feeding, settling, and cuddles.
We’ll capture a variety of images, including baby alone as well as portraits with parents and siblings.
When will I see my photos?
You can view and order your images on the same day as your session, or return at a later date if you prefer. If viewing on the same day, please allow an additional 30–60 minutes after your photoshoot.
Is it better to come to the studio or have an in-home session?
Our studio is fully equipped with professional lighting, a carefully controlled temperature, and a wide range of props — ensuring beautiful results regardless of weather or time of day.
If you prefer the comfort of your own home or are unable to travel, we also offer mobile newborn photography sessions throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast using professional portable lighting.
I’m worried about baby weight — will I look okay in photos?
This is completely normal, and something we gently guide many new mums through. We use flattering posing, angles, and styling to help you look and feel your best.
Professional hair and makeup services are also available if you’d like to feel extra pampered on the day.
Why are most newborns asleep in photos?
Sleeping newborns allow us to safely create calm, curled poses. Awake babies naturally move their arms and legs, which can limit certain poses.
Very young babies are also still developing their vision, which can sometimes affect eye focus in images. A sleepy baby results in safer, more relaxed portraits.
Is newborn photography safe?
Yes — your baby’s safety is always our number one priority. We are trained in safe newborn handling and never force a baby into any position they’re uncomfortable with.
All props are cleaned before use, and many images are created using composite techniques, meaning hands may be supporting your baby during the shot and later edited out. Our team is fully vaccinated and experienced in newborn care.
How do we pay?
A session fee is due on the day of your newborn photoshoot. Image and product purchases can be made on the day or at a later viewing appointment.
We offer multiple payment options, including Humm Buy Now, Pay Later.
